Directed Announces New Toyota Firmware Solution

Just in time for what promises to be a busy remote start season, Directed is rolling out a new TL5 firmware solution for the 2012/13 Toyota Camry and Yaris hatchback key-type models.

It covers the following vehicles:  -2011+ Scion TC
                                                        -2012+ Toyota camry (reg key)
                                                         -2012+ Toyota Yaris Hatch
                                                          -2010+ Toyota 4Runner (G key)  

The new firmware solution for DBALL from Directed, features full convenience functionality along with the data key override. The solution requires no scan tool or any special web key replicating tool to use. The solution is also Directed SmartStart 3.0.1 compatible and offers DTC codes and status alerts.

Could a car stereo dealer find himself in the coffee business one day?

Fiat will be adding a new option to the upcoming 500L due in 2013: a built-in espresso maker developed with Lavazza.
Fiat 500 coffeemakerRight in the cupholder of the 500L, the successor to the new Fiat 500, is a pod-style mini coffee maker complete with a spoon holder.  There’s no visible cables and it plugs directly into the power source between the seats, reports Autoblog in the UK.
The new 500L will also have some high tech infotainment with a next gen UConnect system with an audio system designed in conjunction with Dr. Dre.

Although the 500L (a larger version of the Fiat 500)  will be heading for the U.S. next year, there’s no immediate plans to bring the coffee maker to the U.S., said Fox News, which called the coffee maker, the first of its kind offered by an auto maker.

Intel Serious About Car Security

Intel labs is working on a full car security platform that can tap into the car’s built-in cameras and use them to send you live video of the area around your car.
The video can be sent from the vehicle’s parking assist cameras to your smartphone with only a 5 second delay. And its compressed enough to work easily over 3G. So you can periodically check in on your car by tapping on a smartphone to view near-live video.

It’s just one of the features that Intel Labs is cooking up for a ‘redefining platform’ it hopes to see in new cars.
We spoke to Victor Lortz, a lead researcher on the project. He explained another nifty feature of Intel’s platform.
The car’s dash screen could display a barcode to let you know there’s a new smartphone app available for your car. You scan the code and the app appears on your phone. You are now linked into the car’s electronics system in a secure fashion, without having to download an app from a typical app store.
The feature would give the car companies a seamless and secure way to deliver apps.
“The bar code is something we stumbled upon on in a way. When we were building our demo, we realized we had this whole question of how do you get the app in the phone,” Lortz said, noting that not every driver wants to go through a multi-step process to download an app.
The system could also perform tasks including remote start and locking and unlocking doors.
Intel Labs works with Intel’s commercial departments. The Lab’s job is to create the basic architecture and then it’s up to Intel to develop it.
But Lortz believes we will see his technology in new cars.
“It’s fair to say that Intel is serious about this,” he said. “Once cars get connected there’s a lot of issues around security so that’s another area we’re trying to address.”
Intel aims to create a super secure platform so that car makers and car owners don’t need to worry about hackers—a threat that’s already making headlines.

2011 Toyota Sienna Recall

Toyota is recalling approximately 94,000 2011 Model Year Sienna vehicles produced before early November 2010. No other vehicles are affected by this recall.



Due to the proximity of the stop lamp (brake light) switch bracket to the parking brake pedal when the parking brake is fully applied, the bracket could, in limited circumstances, be deformed by the driver’s foot during parking brake operation.
Depending on the amount of bracket deformation, this condition could cause the brake lights to remain on. If the deformation is significant, the brakes could become partially engaged due to contact from the bracket, resulting in brake drag with associated brake noise, brake vibration, and/or illumination of the brake warning light.  If this condition is not noticed and the vehicle continues to be driven, braking effectiveness could be reduced.

Toyota fait actuellement un rappel d approximativement 94,000 Sienna 2011 produites debut Novembre 2010.  Aucun autre vehicule ne fait parti de ce rappel.
Due a la proximite de l interrupteur de lumiere de frein et de la braquette de frein d urgence, lorsque cette derniere est enfoncee pleinement elle pourrait (selon certaines circonstances) deformer et par consequent causer les lumieres de freins a rester allumees en permanence.  Si la deformation de cette braquette est significative, elle pourrait meme causer les freins a etre partiellement engages, a causer une vibration, illumination possible de la lumiere de frein dans le panneau d instrumentation et meme une possible degradation de la performance du freinage.
